the other night i got this post recommended to me of a guy randomly picking a genre and listening to a playlist of the random genre for the day, trying to stop being "genrephobic". his account on instagram is @blustreblustre and he has inspired me to also stop being genrephobic. i will listen to a playlist, very likely not in its entirety lol, and giving my thoughts and rating on the genre. i also plan on listing a few of my favorites and i'm also going to put them in a playlist
here. i'm going to be using everynoise and its playlist so i apologise in advance if i get the wrong sense of a genre.

i've decided that i might as well start listening to the main genres first. i know it's supposed to be randomised but i wanted to start with the main ones first. i plan on going on rateyourmusic and looking through the genres, and ambient happens to be the first alphabetically. i am not going to necessarily rely on this website but i will be on it for the first few entries.
skimming through the playlist, there are already a few artists and songs i recognise. as for most of these main genres, i feel as if i already have a good sense of what the genre entails. rym describes ambient as
"[emphasizing] texture and tone over traditional musical structure, aimed at evoking a particular atmosphere or mood."
i feel like this is already music i would fully listen to while drifting away to sleep or studying. they are obviously very calming and give a, y'know, ambient feel to them. some songs that have played tried to sneak in drums which i do not appreciate too much. i am usually a fan of ambient jungle but, i dunno, it just startled me for some reason.
some songs will also add in nature-y sounds like water droplets and thunder and whatnot, which i do enjoy. i used to listen to those 8 hour videos of thunder sounds so it's something i can listen to fondly. i've generally always been an asmr fan or whatever and have never subscribed to the hate towards it.
the songs are quite long though which does get annoying when i'm just sitting here trying to muster up any thoughts about this genre. i have nothing else to do, honestly, so i have been sitting here listening to 10 minute tracks of essentially nothing.
i generally do enjoy this genre quite a bit! i'd honestly pick ambient over lofi any day if i had to choose something to listen to while working. songs 1-5 in my playlist will be ambient and i want to keep that pattern. if i dislike a genre so much that only 0-2 songs are enjoyable, i'll just skip it (not excited to get to the redneck genre).
